Bored with how slow your computer has gotten? Here's How to Fix It Yourself!

We've all been there. You sit down to get some work done, fire up your computer, and... crickets. It takes ages to load anything, and even simple tasks become an exercise in frustration. Don't despair! Before you throw your computer out the window, here are some easy ways to diagnose and fix a slow computer yourself:

Clean Up the Clutter:

  • Uninstall Unused Programs:  Just like a cluttered desk, a computer overloaded with unused programs can slow things down. Take some time to uninstall any software you don't recognize or haven't used in a while. (Windows: Search for "Add or remove programs". Mac: Drag unwanted programs to the Trash.)

  • Delete Temporary Files:  Your computer accumulates temporary files over time, like digital dust bunnies. These files can take up valuable space and slow down performance. Use your operating system's built-in disk cleanup tool to remove them. (Windows: Search for "Disk Cleanup". Mac: Click the Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage.)

  • Tame Your Downloads:  Do you have a graveyard of forgotten downloads clogging up your desktop or downloads folder? Move or delete these files to free up space and improve organization.

Give Your RAM a Boost:

  • Close Unnecessary Programs:  Too many programs running at once can hog your computer's memory (RAM). Close any programs you're not actively using by right-clicking on their taskbar icons and selecting "Close". (Pro Tip: Use Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) to see which programs are using the most memory and close the resource-heavy ones.)

Restart Regularly:

  • The Digital Power Nap:  Just like us, computers benefit from a good restart. Restarting clears out temporary files and resets system processes, which can often give your computer a much-needed performance boost.
